Can You Wear a Wig for an MRI? Ask the Imaging Team First

Do not buy a wig on the assumption that you can keep it on during an MRI. Contact the imaging facility before your appointment, tell them about the exact wig and every attachment, and follow their screening and removal instructions. We have not verified MRI safety for Aurora or its components. A style photograph, a comfortable fit or a seller’s glueless description cannot provide that clearance.

1. Describe the whole item before entering the MRI area

RadiologyInfo’s MRI preparation guide, from the American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America, explains that metal and electronic items must stay out of the exam room. It specifically identifies hairpins and similar metallic items among things to remove. These are clinical screening instructions, not an invitation to decide for yourself that a small or hidden part is harmless.

When you call, explain that you wear a wig or hairpiece and how it is attached. Mention any combs, clips, pins, adjustment fittings or other accessories that are actually present. If you do not know what a part is made of, say that it is unknown and ask what information the facility needs from the supplier. Do not infer the contents of the cap from a portrait of the hairstyle or from the name of the hair fiber.

RadiologyInfo’s MRI safety page describes risks from certain metals, possible heating, and interference with the images. It explains that facilities use screening procedures and that the technologist needs to know about external objects before you enter the scanner room. A scan of a body part away from your head is not a reason to skip telling the team about the wig. Let the facility decide what may enter its controlled area.

2. Make a removal plan instead of seeking a shopping shortcut

For Aurora CF030-01, Golden Mixed Layers, the current listing gives a 16-inch length and a 13 × 6-inch lace area. Neither measurement establishes what every fitting contains or whether the item may remain on during MRI. We do not have verified MRI testing or a component-specific clearance for this option. If keeping a hairpiece on is an essential requirement, discuss that need with the imaging team before choosing a product.

Ask practical questions in advance: Will I need to remove it before entering the MRI area? Where can I do that privately, and where should I leave the wig and its accessories? If removal is difficult because of an attachment method, tell the team when scheduling and ask for their instructions. Do not wait until you are outside the scanner room to disclose it. Do not cut out fittings, alter the cap, test it with a household magnet or buy a different fastener as a way to certify the wig yourself.

If the facility requires removal, plan for handling and storage outside the controlled area as instructed. Confirm with staff whether any alternative head covering is allowed; another accessory is not automatically approved. For the wig’s normal storage after the visit, follow its care instructions and see how to choose a storage support. This article helps you prepare questions for the appointment; it does not assess your medical devices, interpret a scan or replace the imaging team’s safety decision.
