Can You Wear a Wig in a U.S. Passport Photo?
A wig can be worn in a U.S. passport photograph when it does not obscure the face, according to the Department of State’s passport-photograph guidance. That does not mean every photograph of someone wearing a wig will be accepted. Before buying a new style just for the appointment, check whether your current hairstyle leaves your face clear and whether the actual photograph meets the current requirements. EVUNIA cannot approve a passport photo or guarantee that a particular wig will make it acceptable.
1. Check face visibility before changing the hairstyle
The State Department’s 8 FAM 402.1 passport-photograph guidance specifically addresses wigs and face visibility. Its separate rules for hats and other head coverings should not be treated as a reason to invent a medical explanation for an ordinary wig. If you have a particular head-covering or medical circumstance, follow the agency’s instructions for that circumstance.
The public passport-photo requirements also address a current likeness, a plain background, expression and an unobstructed face. Read the current examples before the appointment. The photographer’s check and the agency’s decision concern your actual photograph, not a seller’s styling image.
As a preparation step, arrange the hairstyle you intend to wear and look straight at the camera. Check whether a fringe or side section falls across the eyes or face. Ask the photographer to assess the arrangement before the final exposure. Do not assume that a very short wig is automatically necessary, or cut a new fringe simply because a shopping photograph looks different from a passport example.

2. Separate the purchase decision from photo approval
If you are choosing a new wig for everyday use as well as the appointment, start with the cut and color you actually want. For example, the selected Aurora Golden Mixed Layers option lists a length of 16 inches and a 13 × 6-inch lace area. Those specifications describe the option; they do not certify passport-photo suitability or tell you how every strand will sit on your face. Use the selected product details and confirm unresolved fit questions before paying.
Leave time to receive and inspect a new purchase. A photographic appointment is not a delivery guarantee. Keep any return decision separate from the passport decision: a rejected photograph does not establish that the wig is defective or create a special return right. Read EVUNIA’s current voluntary-return conditions before washing, trimming or altering the item. Avoid making an irreversible change merely to meet an appointment that could instead be discussed with the photographer.
Use a real, current photograph of yourself for the application. The illustrations in this guide are shopping and planning scenes, not sample passport photographs or accepted applications. Do not submit them, copy their framing as a compliance template, or digitally replace your hair to create a document photo. This guide concerns U.S. passport preparation; another country or document authority may use different instructions. Check that authority directly rather than carrying these rules across.
